There is a special Memorial Stone in Kilscoran Churchyard in memory of sinking of the HM Drifter Speedwell V which was lost 28 October 1916.
The Stone is positioned with the graves of those RNVR seamen recovered after the sinking and was funded largely by the generosity of the congregation of the Wexford and Kilscoran Union of Parishes under the guidance of Canon Arthur Minion who led at the service last Sunday - 3rd October.
HMD SPEEDWELL V was a Royal Navy hired drifter (Admiralty No. 2264) that was wrecked in a gale on Splaugh Rock, near Greenore Point, County Wexford, 28.10.1916, whilst operating as an anti-submarine netlaying vessel. The ten crew were members of the Royal Naval Reserve, many originating from Banffshire in Scotland.
All hands were lost and only three bodies were recovered: William Young, George Geddes senior and George Geddes junior; they were interred in Kilscoran churchyard.
