William Grant Woodgate was born in Devon in 1875 and joined the Royal Navy November 1896 as a sailmaker. In 1906 he was appointed ships Corporal, Royal Navy Long Service awarded 1911. In 1914 was serving on HMS Devonshire. June 1917 he joined HMS Bellona. Discharged January 1919. In 1930 he was working as a Merchant Seaman
